Boy Scout Troop 181

Boy Scout Troop 181 celebrated its 25th anniversary recently with a catered banquet at Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church. Over 150 active and former scouts, parents, and adult leaders joined together for the celebration. The invocation was given by Christ Our Shepherd Pastor John Weber. The guest speaker was Hollis Harris of Peachtree City, former Chief Executive Officer of several airlines, and former Chief Operating Officer of Delta Airlines. Harris told the story of his life in the airline industry while emphasizing to the scouts the importance of putting God and family first in their lives.

Also present at the celebration was the troop's first scoutmaster, Jack Elrod, of Peachtree City. Elrod recalled the reason he and another father founded Troop 181 was that other troops, at that time, had no openings for new Scouts. After initially meeting outdoors at one of the city parks, Elrod approached Pastor Weber, who invited the Scouts to meet at the church. Christ our Shepherd pastors, staff and congregation continue to be strong supporters of the troop.

Troop 181 is chartered by the Kiwanis Club of Peachtree City. The club was represented by Don Phillips, club president, Rich Bowerman, past Kiwanis representative for the troop, and current representative Tom Conrad. Attending the banquet on behalf of the Flint River Council, Boy Scouts of America, was Andy Brubaker who presented a framed certificate commemorating the anniversary.

The banquet included the troop's quarterly Court of Honor. During this time many scouts were recognized for completion of advancement and merit badge requirements.

In its twenty five year history, Troop 181 has served hundreds of Scouts from Fayette and Coweta counties. Over 75 young men from the troop have earned the Eagle Scout award, Boy Scout's highest honor.

Troop 181 meets every Tuesday night at Christ our Shepherd Lutheran Church. New members are always welcome. For further information call Scott Morrell at 678-817-4900 or at 404-608-4588.
