Four teams have good games, Chiefs handed tough loss

Hitting hard

Of the five local teams playing last Friday, four picked up wins. Sandy Creek, Starr’s Mill and Landmark all got wins over region opponents and have state playoff spots locked up, though seedings won’t be decided until after this Friday. Whitewater remained unbeaten with a 14-11 win over Mill Creek and McIntosh was handed a loss by Haralson County.

Starr’s Mill is in the hunt for a region chamionship and can lock it up with a win over Fayette County on Friday, The Panthers took on Newnan last Friday and won 31-14. Starr’s Mill got two first half touchdowns from Brandon Witta and a field goal by Keegan Hanie to put themselves up 17-7 at the half. In the second half, Antonio Brown and Greg Davis each added touchdowns and the Panthers went on to win 31-14.

Starr’s Mill now sits atop the region standings with a 4-1 region record. East Coweta is tied with Starr’s Mill with a 4-1 record as well but since the Panthers defeated the Indians during the season, they will win the tiebreaker if both teams finish with the same region record.

Landmark Christian is in position to win another region title, but Eagle’s Landing will try to play the role of spoiler in Fairburn on Friday. Landmark defeated Whitefield Academy 20-13 last week and got a huge game from quarterback matt Moody, who rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown and passed for 234 yards and two touchdowns. Jimmy Eden had over 100 yards receiving and a touchdown and Tommy Kinney caught the other touchdown pass.

Landmark and Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy both have 3-0 records in the region. One will win the region title on Friday but both will host state playoff games in the first round the following Friday.

Whitewater got their undefeated season by handing Mill Creek a 14-11 loss and by accepting North oconee’s forfeit for their game, which was scheduled for Thursday evening. The Wildcats got touchdowns from Ryan Hidalgo, who ran for the touchdown after a blocked punt in the second half. Tavoris Dixon also netted himself a second half touchdown. The defense was able to hold Mill Creek back from the endzone just enough to escape with the win. The 10-0 season from the Wildcats should serve as a good springboard for th team as they start region play next fall.

Sandy Creek has locked up a playoff spot but they won’t know whether they will be the third or fourth seed until after Friday night’s game at home against Creekside. What the Patriots do know is that they can successfully spread the ball on an opponent and score a lot of points. Sandy Creek defeated Alexander 41-12 last Friday. The Patriots jumped out to an early 14-0 lead after Brent Brewer ran the opening kickoff back 99 yards for a touchdown ad then scored two plays later, after an onside kick, off of a 35 yard touchdown pass. Other big plays came from Braxton Lane and Tim Russell, each of whom caught touchdown passes from Jake Turing, who threw for 178 yards and three touchdowns. The defense got great play from Aybid Coleman, Brewer and Chris James. Brewer forced a fumble and James had an interception and a blocked punt.

Friday night’s game against Creekside, which is ranked fifth in AAAA in the latest coaches poll from GaSports.com, will be televised on Comcast Sports Southeast, Channel 45 at 7:30 p.m.
McIntosh had a 12-6 lead on Haralson County but the defense, which netted a safety in the second half, gave up two big plays and the Chiefs lost 21-14. Morey Brooks and Nick Popeil scored touchdowns for the Chiefs and one turnover proved itself very costly in the game. McIntosh will play their final game of the season on Friday at Chapel Hill.
