Panthers net their second straight area title

Fayette County lost to the Starr’s Mill in three straight matches; 25-11, 25-11, 25-14, last Thursday in the area championship. Starr’s Mill led the entire way in the first two matches and trailed 2-1 in the third match before retaking the lead. The Lady Panthers dominated with good play at the service line and excellent passing. Their size up front also stopped a number of Fayette volleys and added some points for Starr’s Mill.

It was their second consecutive area title.

Fayette County will take on Lassiter on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Milton High School. Starr’s Mill will meet Pope at Northview High School on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Sandy Creek’s volleyball season came to an end on Saturday, one win short of the state tournament. While the Lady Patriots (37-17) will not be playing in the playoffs, McIntosh will enjoy some post-season play.

Sandy Creek warmed up for Saturday’s action with a win over Mays (25-10, 25-13). On Saturday, the Lady Patriots lost to McIntosh (25-20, 25-13) before beating Whitewater (25-13, 25-14) and Northgate (25-15, 25-20). McIntosh then handed Sandy Creek their final loss of the season (25-19, 25-10).

McIntosh picked up two losses over the weekend, falling to Woodward Academy (25-22, 25-21) in their first meeting of the tournament and then (25-14, 27-25, 25-18) in the area championship game. The Lady Chiefs will meet Jonesboro at 10 a.m. at Clarke Central High School in Athens on Saturday to kick off the state tournament.

Landmark Christian won the area 3 AA/A championship by beating Grady (25-5,25-5) and Lovett (25-18,25-19) on Thursday. The Lady War Eagles faced Lovett in the area finals on Saturday and won (25-11, 26-24, 27-25). Our Lady of Mercy lost to Lovett (25-9, 25-13) on Thursday and then lost to them again on Saturday (25-8,25-16). Landmark will take on Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Wesleyan High School.
