Police: Vehicles may have been racing

Police are getting closer to filing charges stemming from a particularly violent crash on Peachtree Parkway Aug. 30 involving several local teens.

The crash occurred after a 16-year-old McIntosh student lost control of his VW Jetta, causing it to enter the median where it struck a well-established tree.

The driver, Eric Stenger, 16, of Henna Place, Peachtree City was initially in critical condition and was hospitalized for some time due to his injuries from the crash, police said. A passenger in the car, Aaron Fischer, 16, of Patina Point, Peachtree City was treated for injuries and released from the hospital, police said.

The impact of the collision, which occurred on the driver's side of the vehicle, caused a significant intrusion into the vehicle compartment.

Police Chief James Murray said the department wanted to make sure all involved were on their way to recovery before filing charges. In the past few days, officers have presented evidence in the case to juvenile prosecutors, who are conducting several more interviews before lodging the charges, Murray said.

Police obtained video from a school bus that shows Stenger's vehicle careening off the road. Murray said an eyewitness also has come forward who saw Stenger and at least one other vehicle racing on Ga. Highway 54 moments before the crash, police said.

After the crash, police closed both southbound lanes of Peachtree Parkway to conduct the investigation.
