Coweta County commissioners at the Dec. 1 meeting approved the purchase of nearly $350,000 in various types of equipment needed to outfit the seven new fire trucks expected for delivery in mid-January. Both the trucks and the equipment are being paid for with voter-approved bond funds.

A brief discussion between commissioners and Fire Chief Johnny Teeters led to the vote to purchase $349,938 in ventilation and rescue equipment, hoses, a variety of tools, medical devices, thermal imaging cameras, adapters and nozzles.

The approved equipment purchases came from various portions of the bids of six different companies.

Commissioners June 2 approved the purchase of 7 new fire trucks for a total price of $4,333,040. The figure is below the $5 million set aside for the purchases.

The approved purchases will include three 2010 Model Sutphen Custom SP-70 Aerial Platform pumpers from Williams Fire Apparatus, the only company to provide a bid. Priced at $799,936 each, the price for the three units totaled $2,399,808.

The bid for the pumper truck and three pumper tankers came from low bidder Ten-8 Fire Equipment. The three Pierce Quantum Chassis Long Body Pumper/Tankers carried a unit cost of $488,321, while the Pierce Quantum Chassis Long Body Pumper was bid at $468,269. The total cost of the four units was $1,933,232.

Referencing the purchases at the time, Teeters said the purchases will allow the fire department to replace outdated equipment and provide better service to the citizens of Coweta County.

Coweta voters in November 2008 approved a $20 million bond referendum for the purpose of purchasing new fire trucks and equipment, construct a new headquarters and to purchase a communications system.
