Fayette grads hold their own at Ga. collegesWed, 12/09/2009 - 6:22pm

It appears the graduates from Fayette County schools in 2007 fared pretty well at Georgia colleges and universities. That was the result of a feedback report from the University System of Georgia heard by school board members Monday night. The report pertained only to USG-affiliated schools. Commenting on the feedback report, Pupil Personnel Services Director Barbara Serapion said that overall the data reflected the job that everyone, including Fayette teachers and the students themselves, is doing. The report showed that 53 percent of former Fayette students attended a USG school in 2007-2008. That percentage is the same for all public high schools in Georgia, the report said. Serapion noted in response to a board member’s question that the 53 percent figure pertained only to USG schools and did not include private or out of state colleges and universities. She said that approximately 90 percent of Fayette graduates attend college. A total of 65 percent of the former Fayette students received the HOPE scholarship at USG schools compared to 50 percent of freshman across the state. Additionally, the Fayette high school grade point average for students in USG schools was 3.0, as it was for all Georgia freshmen, the report said. The same 3.0 figures held for Fayette and all Georgia freshmen at the end of the first year of college. The report also noted that 10 percent of students from Fayette had not completed the college prep curriculum when they first enrolled, compared to 11 percent of all Georgia freshmen and that 11 percent of former Fayette students were required to take remedial course work in English, reading or math compared to 21 percent of all Georgia freshmen. Also at the Monday meeting, the board had an brief initial discussion on whether to change its meeting dates next year. The board will decide in an upcoming meeting whether to leave the regular meeting and called meeting days on Mondays or to change them to Tuesdays. login to post comments |
