The widening of Ga. Highway 74 south from Cooper Circle to Ga. Highway 85 is expected to begin this Tuesday, the Georgia Department of Transportation announced Monday.

The $16.9 million project is being funded by federal stimulus money through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The 3.38 mile section of road will be widened from two to four lanes. The completion date is Dec. 31, 2011.

Included in the project are a new bridge over Flat Creek; the realignment of Rockaway Road to meet the traffic light at Holly Grove Road and Hwy. 74; and the realignment of Padgett Road.

When completed, Hwy. 74 will be at least four lanes from Fairburn to the Ga. Highway 85 intersection south of Peachtree City.

Georgia DOT has created a Web page (www.dot.ga.gov/gastimulus) devoted to stimulus activities to provide specific program information and promote transparency of the process.

The ARRA is a national effort to create jobs and transform America’s economy to compete in the 21st century. Nationwide, some $48 billion in stimulus investments are being made in transportation infrastructure, including highways, public transit, high speed rail and aviation.
