Coweta County commissioners gave the go-ahead Nov. 3 for needed roadwork rehabilitation work on three-dozen county streets and roads. The work will likely be bid out rather than using inmate labor due to the size of the project.

The total cost to the county is approximately $4 million along with a reimbursement of $322,766 from Georgia Dept. of Transportation. The bid process is tentatively set for March.

County administrator Theron Gay said the work will probably be done through a contracted bid as opposed to the use of inmate labor.

“This is a bigger than we could take on in one paving season,” he said.

A brief discussion on the possibility of using inmate labor resulted in Gay saying he would look at using that approach to the extent possible.
