Peachtree City voters, your job is not done yet.

Candidates in three races failed to win 50 percent of the vote, there will be a runoff election Tuesday, Dec. 1.

The runoff for mayor includes current councilman Cyndi Plunkett and recent councilman Don Haddix. Haddix was the leading vote-getter with 45.19 percent and Plunkett was second with 29.04 percent in the three-candidate race.

The Post 3 runoff features newcomers Kim Learnard and Bob Walsh. The winner will take the seat currently held by Steve Boone, who had the least amount of votes in Tuesday's election. Learnard drew 48.06 percent of voters, falling just short of an outright win, while Walsh got 33.47 percent.

Why did you comment that Steve Brown started the corruption and mudslinging? You just stated that you know what has happened in the past and had tacit agreement concerning the Lennox statement. Don't write fiction.
And you refer to this publication as a "rag"? What, pray tell, oh cosmopolitan one, which publication we should give creedence? I await your missive from up high, oh erudite one! Do wax poetically for us!

Here is the rub with law suits, covenants, etc. Have a defensible and justifiable code and stick to it regardless of who wants a change or who requests a variance. The moment that a variance is established, it becomes a foothold for others to sue. I am tired of an administration that rolls over for every zoning, annexation, or land use change request.
and do you really believe that Steve Brown started corruption in Peachtree City? It has been alive and well for most of its inception. Follow the money

I feel it is better to fight it one time in the courts if it becomes necessary than to capitulate each time it comes up again and it will, once you make an exception--like it or not the exception then becomes the rule. We need to stand up for what we have and defend it against those who want to change it for their financial benefit.

Hey Don, exactly how much of Plunkett's $13,710.95 that she raised (pretty impressive) do you consider to be "special interest" money? You imply that any contribution to Cyndi is a special interest. It is unfair to assume that anyone who donates to her campaign (I haven't) does it quid pro quo. I am no more interested in seeing special interests influence government, especially in Washington, than you are, but don't paint with a broad brush, OK? Allow for the possibility (and likelihood in my view) that Plunkett worked hard and gained favor with voters and got some financial backing as a result.

Class envy isn't admirable, neither is whining about the money the other guy (or gal) raised in a campaign runoff you find yourself in.
If you feel like you need financial resources for your campaign, go out and do it the old fashioned way and work for it, my friend.

Ask her about what the Rec. Commission is doing right now (which SHE is on) in condoning T-Mobile putting UGLY cell towers in our public parks and next to our schools and in our greenspaces.

Find out why the Planning Comm. is going to approve changing our parks (many of them) to "OPEN SPACE" category that will allow cell towers. Changing a cemetery to open space?????? A greenbelt on Crabapple to OPEN SPACE. All to accommodate cell towers and God knows what else.

Ask her how she will vote on this at Council mtg. tomorrow night. She would sell this town to the devil if she could. And with her and Harry in the majority till we get rid of BOTH of them, they will do this---watch these votes coming up. It's screw the beauty of this town and sign leases we will NEVER get out of.

As to the special interest he's talking about. I thought all contributions over $100. had to be listed. Still undecided on my vote in this race, and any input from Don on these "special interest groups" would be useful. That's also a dead giveaway to whom I voted for in the beginning. Hey, I like old cars. Smiling

OK, we can agree on something after all. A resounding 75% of us said NO MORE TAXES! Are you listening Peachtree City elected officials and runoff folks? We love our city and we want it to be special, but you must find a way to effectively tighten your budget just like the rest of us in the real world. A three to one margin is beyond landslide, it is butt whipping territory. Do right by us in PTC and don't raise our taxes. We have spoken as clearly as we know how to speak.

If we want the Cart Paths etc., kept in good shape for ALL area citizens, it's now squarely on the back of the Citizens of Peachtree City. Taxes will almost certainly have to be raised. As a PTC resident, I see no other way, other than to continue to shut down "programs" that have made PTC what it is today.

Submitted by PTC4LIFE on Wed, 11/04/2009 - 10:40am.

Do you use the cart paths? I do heavily, both on bike and golf cart and last I checked roots on pavement dont prevent use, therefore they can wait till revenue increases.

I think regarding the cart path system, the city should come up with a volunteer work group who would donate time to their community and help repair paths. Spreading gravel and asphalt is not difficult. I know first hand.

Community service to lawbreakers is an option too, for repairing paths.

Submitted by Spyglass on Wed, 11/04/2009 - 3:41pm.

I agree, donations of labor would be nice, few would do it. I spend an hour or so policing (picking up trash) on the paths around my home weekly. The park at Battery Way is another place I try to keep looking nice. Lots of out of the area folks enjoy leaving beer cans and worm buckets for folks like us to pick up.

As a resident of PTC, or any area that has shopping etc that draws out of town folks, a YES vote on the SPLOST was a no brainer, in my humble opinion. Apparently, others think that no one from out of town ever comes here and spends money. It's over, and that is my last comment on it. We were shortsighted, that is all.

Submitted by citizenal on Thu, 11/05/2009 - 5:30pm.

It is never shortsighted to hold Government accountable. PTC should have been repairing and saving money to repair the paths all along. They didn't because they were not wise. This SPLOST was a laundry list of poor Government trying to bail themselves out. It is time to force them to plan and think. There is still fat in the budget to be sure. Raising taxes isn't going to go over easily. Our leaders are going to have to work for their living.

Too bad the only two candidates, Barker and Craig, that had the wisdom and courage to oppose the SPLOST got so little support.

I am very thankful other folks in the County won't have to watch as their homes and property are destroyed by another SPLOST. I am very thankful other home owners won't have to endure the arrogance of our Commissioners telling them their homes and home sites will be destroyed because, "You voted for it." All of the folks in the West Fayetteville Bypass Coalition had that remark thrown in our faces when we pointed out to our Commissioners that the West Fayetteville Bypass didn't appear on the 2003 SPLOST ballot. We had to swallow it when an arrogant Commissioner made the remark that one of our members would, "Have to be real careful crossing that road with your water bucket."

Thanks, from the bottom of my heart, to everyone who fought to have today's SPLOST publicized. It just proves that when the voters are informed they are able to make an informed decision. All of us in the West Fayetteville Bypass Coalition knew that we had not voted to have our homes and property destroyed. We knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that we had never voted for the West Fayetteville Bypass.

I notice the postcards she sent out, she went with an out of town printer. There are so many local places she could have had that done and kept that campaign money here in town.

Anyway, considering the difference in funds spent, that was practically a Haddix landslide!

I hope he wins the runoff.

Fleisch won over Dyer with 58% of the vote - a cakewalk. Two reasons for that,

One is that she or her supporters (unfairly) tagged Dyer as a developer's tool because his wife works for the devil. He didn't attack her for her position on property rights for some reason. She had no position on anything else, no debate, no challenge to her intellect.
She was virtually unopposed.

The other reason has to do with you 3 guys. One or 2 of you should have picked a different race to enter. Specifically Post 4. You could have elevated the campaign, raised some real issues and created a runoff. In a runoff, you could attack Fleisch on her anti-property rights stance and with a little luck, beat her.

Now because you picked the wrong fight - she thinks she has a mandate and you guys are watching the finals from your couch.

Although I must say to both Barker and Rowland that your showing as young leaders was impressive enough to run again next time. I think there will be some weak and clueless council people as a result of this election and they will be vulnerable to a "youth movement" in 4 years. Good luck.

Kudos to Barker for having put up a good fight in a multi-challenger race. The guy graduated from college this year, got married, and still found the necessary time and energy to put forth a cohesive and effective campaign at the ripe old age of 23. The political future is bright for Shelby not only because he has the drive and determination, but because his conservatism will serve him effectively in serving us. Great guy and a great campaign effort.

over til it's over." We can't be complacent and not get out there and vote out the 'developers' darling'. Let's not leave it to chance--too much is at state. You know all those money people who threw the big bucks at Plunkett will reach even deeper when they come to realize that Haddix looks real good for the Mayor's seat and they won't be getting those votes they are used to. Too many Peachtree City citizens didn't get out there and vote. Don't let that happen for the run-off. If you want to save what is left of PTC we have to see that Plunkett get 'Punked' right out of the running. Good luck Mr. Haddix--to you and to our city.

Now that the SPLOST has been rejected here is what the commission is going to say.

Since the people of Fayette didn't approve a SPLOST which would have been paid by people who don't live in Fayette, we have to raise property taxes. (but they will still be paying their political debts with your taxes)

Hold on to your wallets. It's going to be a bumpy year.

The all female scenario is looking good - except for Cyndi, of course.

Here's what will happen in the runoffs:
Turnout will be low.
Turnout among those with a candidate still in the race will be higher than among those who supported a losing candidate.

Haddix is implying that Rowan supporters will come out and vote against Cyndi (meaning for him) - that won't happen, but he will win anyway. After all Cyndi is 1,000 votes behind. She has to get that many Rowland votes or pull 500 from Haddix - impossible. Haddix wins.

Same thing for Walsh - Boone supporters stay home and Kim wins with the same % of the vote she now has.

The interesting race is Beth and Eric. Beth is clearly the better choice, but this is a close race and the one that will drive whatever turnout there is - meaning the supporters for Beth and Eric will come out specifically to vote for one or the other and by being there will also vote n the other 2 runoffs. These are mostly anti-incumbent people, so more bad news for Cyndi.

To me Haddix and Kim are already in and Beth will win if she works hard enough in the next few weeks. That is an all-female sweep of council!

Gender does not matter to me, but Haddix and Pullias have earned their seat through actual work in the community.Learnard's professional background makes her qualified as well. Only concern I have is Fleisch who is already in with a very bad first step on property rights. Hopefully she realizes this and will study up before she has to start making decisions on.... well, property rights in January.

I don't think Doug McMurrian is going to be able to push the new group around.

This election no matter how it turns out (unless Plunkett prevails) will be huge improvement for the city. We have never had so many qualified people step up in any election I remember and I've been here 25 years.

Submitted by citizenal on Thu, 11/05/2009 - 5:15pm.

Pullias has paid the dues of hard work. However, she has freely declared her sympathy with raising taxes FAR to casually for me. Anyone who voted NO on the SPLOST should vote no on Pullias.

Learnard is well published as favoring the bankrupting of our country with universal Government run healthcare. She supported Plunkett and here decision to support McMurrian. This is no lover of our village concept or fiscal soundness.

Haddix, Imker and Walsh all the way! This team will hold the line for us and our children.

then not raise taxes. The T in SPLOST stands for TAXES!!!!!

Do you actually believe that the county and the city will just shrug off a gazillion dollar tax loss and not try to pass it along to the voters? You think they are going to cancel projects or curtail spending? If so, you are really naive.

You are gonna pay these taxes, people. Government will not tighten it's belt. Instead it will tax you another way. Why don't you all understand that?

Submitted by Bonkers on Fri, 11/06/2009 - 3:49am.

I think there are enough now against keeping a very high budget that the people getting paid by taxes won't be able to keep everyone on the payroll and spent the same as usual or more!

Sometime, somewhere, it must be realized that those "safe" jobs must eventually be cut. And, that no manager needs such extreme salaries and benefits in hard times.

Submitted by Angry Taxpayer on Thu, 11/05/2009 - 8:40pm.

Did you even look at the list of "pork" projects in SPLOST before you blindly voted for it??? I doubt it. It looked like it was assembled by the same bozos Nancy Pelosi used to prepare the "porkulous bill" earlier this year.

There may have been a few worthwhile projects in SPLOST, but they were operational expenses that should be part of the operational budget process, not "punted" to a SPLOST.

I think Eric Imker had the right idea at the second forum when he said SPLOST needed to go back to drawing board. I like Beth Pullias, and I voted for her, but I'm beginning to think PTC needs an Eric Imker on City Council at this time to restore some fiscal sanity.

SPLOST tsunami wave means political disaster for Commission incumbents. Interesting to see how Eric Maxwell distances himself from this orphan the way he did with Horgan. The problem is that the voters will wake up every morning for months to come and be reminded of the Commission arrogance when they see the West Fayetteville road to nowhere under construction off Highway 54. You might want to put them all on political suicide watch.

Voice of Fayette you summed it up pretty good.

"The problem is that the voters will wake up every morning for months to come and be reminded of the Commission arrogance when they see the West Fayetteville road to nowhere under construction off Highway 54. You might want to put them all on political suicide watch."

It is so true. I can't imagine the hurt of the person told 'be careful crossing the road to get your water',nor those told 'you voted for it'.

I had no dog in that fight other than not wanting higher taxes untill two friends took me on a drive from start to finish of the by pass to no where. It was a complete joke. I was amazed that someone would try to pull that off.

As for going around Fayetteville, the traffic moves fast through the town and the main road has been widened above. If you take the traffic away from the main drag of Fayetteville, you will have more empty store fronts. You only have to look at what 74 did to downtown Tyrone. You can't have it both ways. No drive by traffic means less sales.
"SPLOST tsunami wave means political disaster for Commission incumbents" Truer words were never spoken, and I hope they never forget that threat till the end of their term.
