Early voting ends this week for SPLOST, races in 3 citiesTue, 10/27/2009 - 4:08pm
By: John Munford
Polls are open all this week at the Peachtree City and Tyrone libraries and at the county’s elections office in downtown Fayetteville from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The early voting period ends Friday at 5 p.m. and there will be no early voting Monday, Nov. 2. At each location, voters will be able to vote on their local municipal election as well as the special election for the proposed Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). This will be especially convenient for more than 9,000 city voters who, if they wait until election day, will have to go to two different polling places to vote in their city election and the SPLOST election. The two-poll inconvenience is due to some city precincts being dissimilar from the precincts used for voting on countywide issues. To minimize confusion, the county elections department mailed postcards to voters of which locations they would need to vote at for both elections. Due to Willowbend Road being closed near the Peachtree City library, voters may find it easier to park in the Picnic Park parking lot and then cross the creek bridge on foot. The voting area is located downstairs. A total of 79 people voted in municipal elections Monday while 343 votes were cast in the SPLOST election. The contested races and the number of candidates in each are as follows: Peachtree City — For mayor, Don Haddix, Cyndi Plunkett and Scott Rowland (there is no incumbent in this race). For Post 1, Shelby Barker, David Craig, Eric Imker and Beth Pullias (no incumbent). For Post 3, Steve Boone (incumbent), Kim Learnard and Robert Walsh. For Post 4, Les Dyer and Vanessa Fleisch (no incumbent). Fayetteville — For Post 3, Patty Hawkins and Walt White (incumbent). For Post 4, Larry Dell (incumbent) and Mickey Edwards. For Post 5, Bill Dick and Paul Oddo (incumbent). Tyrone — For Post 3, Grace Caldwell (incumbent) and Ken Matthews. For Post 4 candidate Gloria Furr is the incumbent and is running unopposed. login to post comments |
