Coweta’s unemployment up slightly in September

New preliminary unemployment figures for September show Coweta County’s rate at 10 percent, up from the 9.8 percent revised rate for August. Unemployment in the Three Rivers area remained steady at 12 percent.

The September rate of 10 percent for Coweta equates to 5,826 people out of work in a workforce of 58,018. Coweta’s unemployment in September 2008 was 6 percent.

Figures provided by Georgia Dept. of Labor show a decrease in Newnan’s unemployment rate from 11.7 percent in August to 11.4 percent in September, representing 1,461 people out of work in a workforce of 12,761.

Unemployment in the 10-county Three Rivers Regional Commission area held steady last month with a rate of 12 percent, representing 26,629 people out of work. The unemployment rate a year ago was 7.5 percent. Coweta had the lowest unemployment rate of all the Three Rivers counties.

Next door in Peachtree City the unemployment rate decreased slightly from 7.7 percent in August to 7.6 percent in September.

In Douglasville unemployment inched a bit higher, with a September rate of 12.2 percent compared to 12.1 percent in August. And in LaGrange a bad situation showed some improvement in the past month. Rates decreased to 14.4 percent in September from 14.9 percent in August.

Expanding the view on unemployment, the 28-county metro Atlanta area saw an increase in September to 10.5 percent compared to 10.3 percent in August and a 6.7 percent rate in September 2008.

Unlike the situation in metro Atlanta, Georgia’s unemployment rate increased slightly in September to 10.2 percent, up from 10.1 percent in August. Those numbers represent 480,124 people out of work. Georgia’s unemployment rate one year ago was 6.6 percent.
