Waffle House Gang loses a friend

I am proud to tell everyone that I belong to two “gangs,” the Waffle House gang, and the Gold Wing motorcycle gang.

The Waffle House gang has just lost a longtime member, Ernest “Chief” Dockery. He was a native American, of the Northern Cheyenne nation.

You couldn’t miss Chief if you came into the restaurant: he wore long braid down his back, and often had a t-shirt on that showed the late Gen. George Custer in the middle of a circle of Indians.

He, like myself, was a student of history. We would often sit for a long time discussing various aspects of history, both old and new.

He loved to talk and sometimes people wouldn’t believe what he said, because he said so much. But I am here to defend him: he was always 99 percent correct.

He had served as a Ranger in the United States Army in Vietnam and always had stories to tell about his service.

He died too early, just 70 years old, and I shall miss those precious historical discussions.

A request was made for any memorial donation to go to: American Indian College Fund, 8333 Greenwood Blvd., Denver, CO 80221.

Let’s show Chief just how much we loved him by honoring his request.
