Yearly visitor urges Hwy. 74 cart path tunnelTue, 10/13/2009 - 3:27pm

Every summer I come from Miami Springs, Fla., to Peachtree City for a week to visit my dear friend who lives on Willow Creek Drive. Since she likes to sleep in until about 9 a.m., she has afforded me the opportunity to get up about 7 a.m. and go out on her golf cart to greatly enjoy some time fellowshipping with God on your peaceful pathways. You are so blessed to have been given the unusual foresight to have constructed such a unique plan within your city. Although I have never driven a car on your streets, I have, over the past seven or so years, explored every one of your wonderful golf cart paths. I have found my way to the three schools at the southern end and to the Kedron Village Shopping Center on the northern end, and by many different routes. I have just loved the challenge. I have color-coded a map to indicate which “new trails” I have explored each particular year; last year the employees at City Hall all enjoyed perusing it when we stopped by to purchase an updated map. Incidentally, I am very impressed with the new numbering system and would have loved to have been able to be a volunteer to help with the process. When I was there in 2007, you were in the process of building a tunnel under Ga. Highway 74 at Willow Creek Bend as part of a road-widening project. When I arrived last summer, I was very disappointed to realize that, although the tunnel was completed, it wasn’t ready for use. We went to City Hall and spoke with a gentleman who advised us that the rights for the access paths were the holdup and expected it would be completed by the summer of 2009. Well, I was even more disappointed this past summer to find the situation still had not progressed at all. Another visit to City Hall resulted in pretty much an identical report. It is very inconvenient to have to go all the way down to the Kelly Drive tunnel, and then it even becomes dangerous to ride on the side of the road along the heavily traveled Dividend Drive and Paschal Road to access the post office or The Avenue. Is there any further information available concerning those two access pathways? This week my friend sent me your front-page report that the “approach paths” to the bridge spanning the CSX tracks on Ga. Highway 54, as well as the tunnel underneath, are within weeks of being approved for construction. That is great news, but access to the Hwy. 74 tunnel is just as urgent; please put a “rush” on that one as well. Looking forward to access to both by next summer.
