Allows cost savings, better team structure

Peachtree City’s two select youth soccer organizations are merging, and all that’s basically left to do now is pick a new name and a new color scheme.

The city’s Lazers and Lightning programs are realizing economic benefits from the merger, organizers told the City Council Thursday night.

Those cost savings have allowed the organizations to offer $40,000 in scholarships to players whose families were not able to afford the cost of participating, organizers said.

The changes will not affect the city’s recreational soccer program except that the new organization’s coaches will be able to help provide better instruction to those players.

There are about 600 select players participating in the new as-yet-unnamed program. That allows for better teams to be built at the most appropriate age levels and helps attract other players, organizers said.

In addition to the pending name and color selection, there will also be a new website up for the league in a few weeks. Organizers said they also hope to be able to increase the amount of tournaments coming to the city.

The select program gives players the opportunity to travel around the country and face the best players in the United States, organizers said.
