In conjunction with February’s designation as Heart Month by the American Heart Association, Southern Regional Health System once again brought the “the largest health fair in the State of Georgia” to Southlake Mall in Morrow. The fourth annual Heart of the Southern Crescent Health Fair Feb. 11 was a success as thousands of Valentine’s Day shoppers took time out to check out their health. Families were entertained by Southern Regional’s mascot, Dr. Wiszer. Radio Disney was also on hand with music, games and prizes for kids.

Thousands participated in the fair’s activities which included a variety of healthy heart screenings such as EKG and Blood Pressure Screening, Diabetes & Cholesterol Screening, BMI (Body Mass Index), and Vascular and Respiratory Function Screening. Additionally, trained medical professionals provided assessment reports for the risk of heart attack or stroke and medication counseling for those that bought their current prescriptions. Local sponsors for the event included: Amerigroup Community Care, Air Tran, The Coca Cola Bottling Company, WellCare of Georgia, GE Medical, Peach State Health Plan, Clayton News Daily, Henry Daily Herald and Sepracor Pharmaceuticals.

Also, as part of Heart Month, Southern Regional will sponsor other community events to promote heart disease awareness, including a Lunch and Learn entitled “Do You Have a Broken Heart.” The public is invited to learn more about heart disease, signs, symptoms and treatment options from presenter Jennifer Griffin, RN, BSN, MS. To register for this event, please call HealthCall at 770-541-1111. A free lunch will be provided.
