Unemployment falls in Coweta

The unemployment situation in Coweta is beginning to look a bit better. Rates in August decreased significantly in Newnan and across the county, dropping nearly three-quarters of a percent.

Coweta’s unemployment went from 10.6 percent in July to 9.9 percent in August, with 5,792 people out of work in a workforce of 58,226. Coweta’s unemployment rate in August 2008 was 6.1 percent.

Unemployment rates in also dropped significantly in Newnan last month, with the 12.7 percent rate in July decreasing to 11.9 percent in August. Newnan’s August 2008 rate was 7.2 percent.

Things also looked up in nearby Peachtree City, where the 8 percent rate in July decreased slightly to 7.8 percent in August.

The 10-county Three Rivers area saw unemployment rates drop a full percentage point, from 13.1 percent in July to 12.1 percent in August. The drop equates to 26,863 people out of work in a labor force of 222,274.

Unemployment in the 28-county Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area saw a decline in unemployment from 10.6 percent in July to 10.4 percent in August. Fayette and Coweta were two of a handful of counties that registered less than 10.2 percent unemployment

And statewide the rate also dropped, with figures showing 10.2 percent of people without jobs in August compared to 10.5 percent in July.

The situation nationwide also improved somewhat in the past month. Figures for August not seasonally adjusted showed a rate of 9.6 percent compared to 9.7 in July.
