Approximately 6,000 Fayette property owners will get a new tax bill in the mail soon because of an error in the first bill.

The error is not in the homeowner’s favor, however. The first bill did not include a $49 charge for subdivisions that have street lights whose utility bills are paid by the county, according to Fayette County Tax Commissioner George Wingo.

Wingo said the charge is not a tax increase but was inadvertently left off the tax bills which were sent in the mail.

Homeowners who receive the corrected bills should discard their original bill and pay the amount shown on the new bill, Wingo said. For homeowners whose taxes are paid by an escrow account with a mortgage company, the bill should be forwarded to them with a notation that the bill is a corrected version.

Homeowners who do not pay their taxes through an escrow account will have until Nov. 30, 2009, to pay their corrected tax bills.
