A proposal to rebuild a long-washed-out bridge over Whitewater Creek on Hood Road west of Gingercake Road is already creating opposition from homeowners on both sides of the creek.

The new bridge would allow traffic from downtown Fayetteville to divert onto Hood Avenue, cross the creek on a new bridge and eventually reach Sandy Creek Road.

Two homeowners spoke to the Fayette County Commission last week in opposition of the project. Donald Fowler and Richard Price both thanked Commissioner Lee Hearn for meeting with residents about the project.

Price said the projected bridge location is near several homes.

“The main concern is due to all the blind driveways and children out there,” Price said, noting the area has a 25 mph speed limit. “The only thing that bridge will do is cut off one mile of access to Highway 54 which is fully capable of handling what traffic would be diverted anyway.

Price said the community will be preparing a petition to present to commissioners in the future.

Fowler said he thinks the project, which could be funded by the new transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax on November’s ballot, would be a waste of taxpayer money.
