Annie Laura Clowers

Annie Laura Clowers, Newnan, died Sept. 4, 2009. She was born Nov. 30, 1930 in Forsyth, Monroe County, Ga. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Eugene Clowers and Robert and Ethel Sewell, a sister, Willie Eugenia Clowers, and a great-nephew, Stitius Bernard Bussie. She was graduated Valedictorian of Howard Warner High School, and continued her education at what is now Savannah State University. She then went on to New York at Columbus University and New York University where she earned her Masters Degree in Education. She taught at Woodland, Georgia, Central High School in Newnan, after integration at Newnan High School.

She retired in 1992 after 40 years of teaching, including being named as Teacher of the Year. She was active in Newnan Chapel United Methodist Church serving with the United Methodist Women and Senior Choir as president. She was part of the Bible Study group and the Mature Adults. She was a member of the Orchettes Civic and Social Club, holding many offices, and Golden Soror of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority since her college years. Services were at the Newnan Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Carol Helton officiating. Interment was at Eastview Cemetery. Survivors include nephews, Michael and Lorie Clowers, Andre Clowers; six great-nieces and nephews; one aunt; and four cousins. Roscoe Jenkins Funeral Home, Newnan, was in charge.
