Whitewater moves to 2-0, other locals go to 1-1 in week 2 of football

Only one of the Fayette County schools eligible to improve to 2-0 this week accomplished their goal, while a few others put their first wins of the season on the board.

The Whitewater Wildcats toppled the Upson Lee Knights 31-15 behind three touchdowns from Josh Clemons, a touchdown from quarterback Renaldo Jenkins and a 41 yard field goal from Dylan Johnson. Whitewater (2-0) takes on Mays at Lakewood in Atlanta on Friday. The Raiders (2-0) topped Douglass 20-6 last Friday.

Sandy Creek improved to 1-1 with a 48-7 drubbing of Shaw. The Patriots got two touchdowns from Rajion Neal, and touchdowns from Devon Hughes (four catches for 68 yards), Mike Spaulding, Jarrett Davis (two catches for 69 yards), Bruce Dukes and Evan Moore. Quarterback Ronnie Bell was 8 of 10 passing for 175 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, the team was led by nine tackles from Isaiah Johnson, eight from Cedric Byrd and six, including two for a loss from Mike Spaulding. Sandy Creek (1-1) hosts Alexander (1-1) on Friday. The Cougars lost to Northgate 14-0 last week.

Starr's Mill had a close game with Villa Rica but edged out last year's region runners-up 20-13. Trenton Edwards, Jake Thelen and Derek Brown all had touchdowns for the Panthers, while Gunnar Carson preserved the win with an interception in the final seconds of the game. Adam Holley was 8 for 11 passing for 123 yards and a touchdown, he also rushed for 47 yards in the win. Justin Smith was the leading receiver with four catches for 59 yards. Derek Williams had four punt returns for 153 yards. Starr’s Mill (1-1) plays at Tri-Cities on Friday. The Bulldogs (0-2) lost to Carver, Columbus 39-13 last Thursday.

McIntosh opened their game with Newton with an 87 yard kickoff return for a touchdown from Daniel Price but there were few highlights after that for the Chiefs. Newton scored 42 unanswered points, including two touchdowns in the first three minutes of the third quarter on their way to a 42-14 win. Darius Miliam had a touchdown later in the game for McIntosh after an interception from Clay Carroll. Andrew Graham led the Chiefs in tackles with 16, while Nick Morrow added 14 and Rickey Oskey and Sean Carney each had 12. McIntosh (1-1) plays at Lithia Springs (0-2) on Friday. The Lions lost to Manchester 25-24 last week.

Fayette County put up some points in their game at Houston County but lost 28-20. Fayette County (1-1) hosts Douglas County (0-2) on Friday. Douglas County fell to Carrollton 31-7 last week.

Landmark Christian (0-2) hosts Pace Academy (0-2). The Knights lost to Athens Christian 27-17 last Friday.

Our Lady of Mercy (0-1) will face North Cobb Christian at Kennesaw Mountain High School on Friday. The Eagles (0-1) lost to Mt. Pisgah 28-7 in the season opener.
