Fayette County Public Library Wraps Up “Fayette on the Page 2009” with September 10 Finale Featuring “A Lesson Before Dying” Author Ernest J. Gaines

Fayette County Public Library is wrapping up the second annual “Fayette on the Page: One Book, One Community” project. The 2009 countywide reading and discussion program, featuring the 1993 novel “A Lesson Before Dying,” by Louisiana author Ernest J. Gaines, kicked off in May of this year with a series of activities including a film festival, an art competition, a group book discussion, and a grand finale event starring Ernest Gaines himself, live onscreen in an exclusive videoconference from his home in Louisiana.

“Great stories can bring a community together, and that has been our goal this year with ‘A Lesson Before Dying.’ It is a powerful novel with a universal message about courage, human dignity, and the triumph of hope in times of despair,” says Chris Snell, director of the Fayette County Public Library. “The response from our customers has been overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic. We welcome everyone to join us on September 10 to meet Ernest Gaines and celebrate his work. ”

“An Evening with Ernest J. Gaines” takes place at the Fayette County Public Library on Thursday, September 10 from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. The public is invited and admission is free. Mr. Gaines will talk about “A Lesson Before Dying” and answer questions from the audience. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for Fayette County readers to interact with a living literary legend. Everyone can relax and enjoy free food and live music that echo the Louisiana setting of “A Lesson Before Dying.” Copies of “A Lesson Before Dying” and other books by Ernest Gaines will be available for purchase at the event, with proceeds benefiting the Friends of the Fayette County Public Library.

Partnering with the Fayette County Public Library and the Friends of the Fayette County Public Library to present “Fayette on the Page 2009” are Barnes & Noble of Fayetteville, Clayton State University, and Kimbo’s Frame & Design of Fayetteville.

The Fayette County Public Library is located behind the Fayette County administration complex in downtown Fayetteville, at the southwest corner of Highways #85 and #54.
