A Hampton man died this morning after his car struck a tractor trailer on Ga. Highway 279 near Imperial Way shortly after midnight.

Vance R. Johnson, 44, was driving south on Hwy. 279 when his vehicle crossed into the northbound lanes and the path of a tractor trailer driven by Victor Soto, 46, of Bogart, according to sheriff’s deputies.

The crash was a head-on collision, and Johnson died at the scene, deputies said. The crash caused heavy damage to both vehicles.

Neither Soto nor a passenger in his truck were injured; they were wearing seatbelts. Johnson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, deputies said.

The investigation is being conducted by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies are not expecting to file any charges related to the crash.
