Planners get peek at tiny annexFri, 08/14/2009 - 4:03pm

Commission reminds developer location is ‘gateway’ to PTC A proposed 18-acre annexation off Ga. Highway 74 south near Redwine Road was scrutinized by the Peachtree City Planning Commission Monday night. The proposal would allow a 3.86 acre portion to have a commercial use with the remainder of the property being donated to the city to expand the Meade Field recreation complex. The applicant is Southern Pines Plantation, which has approval to build a 177,000 square foot development including a shopping center with office uses that is located in the unincorporated county. SPP wants the annexation so it can link its property to the sewer service, and an SPP official said the sewer line would not be extended to service other adjoining properties. But several planning commissioners suggested instead of bringing in a tiny piece of the shopping center that SPP should seek to have the whole site annexed into the city. Doing so would allow the entire tract to be subject to the city’s design standards including those for signs and setbacks. Karl Westmoreland, representing SPP, said the company would look into how it could comply with the county and city regulations simultaneously. Commissioner Patrick Staples noted that the area would be considered one of the gateways into the city and that should be evident in the landscaping, architecture and building configuration. City Council candidate Vanessa Fleisch said she was concerned about how the city would pay for maintenance and construction of the proposed Meade Field expansion. The commission took no vote on the proposal because the discussion came during an informal workshop session. The annexation will likely be considered in a formal vote at a later date. The commission only has the power to recommend approval or denial of a proposed annexation. The final say-so on annexations rests with the city council. login to post comments |
