As a venturer, I promise to do my duty to God

And help strengthen America, to help others,

And to seek truth, fairness, and adventure

In our world.

This oath is the basis of Venture Crew, a co-ed branch of the Boy Scouts designed for youth between the ages of fourteen and twenty. Crew 100, of Fayetteville, will soon embark on a journey to Philmont Scout Ranch, marking this summer as one we will always remember. Philmont is located in New Mexico and occupies over 200 square miles. This extensive wilderness is located in the Sangre de Cristo range of the Rocky Mountains. Every year, hundreds of scouts set out on backpacking treks covering fifty-one to one hundred eight miles. The thirty-five treks range from rugged, to challenging, to strenuous, climaxing with the most intense, super strenuous. Crew 100 has selected a strenuous hike venturing into the unmarked region of the Valle Vidal.

Starting on August 6, Venture Crew 100 will begin an eleven day hike covering seventy-eight miles. Philmont is a true wilderness without many comforts and conveniences. In the afternoon, we will participate in various activities such as homesteading, rock climbing and rappelling, burro racing, and horse riding. Each itinerary includes its own activities and route. Our twelve-person crew, including eight teens, will learn valuable lessons about wilderness survival, fitness, leadership, and teamwork while in the Land of Enchantment. We are grateful for our advisors Mr. Russell Wood, Mrs. Andrea Wood, Mr. Matthew Harbin, and Mr. Tony McWaters. The youth include Daniel Harbin, David Harbin, David McWaters, Emily Wood, Hollie McWaters, Katie Wood, Nicholas Doris, and Timothy Lindsey.
