The Fayette County School System has begun collecting revenues from the 1-cent sales tax initiative passed by voters in November. Comptroller Laura Brock told school board members Monday the system has received a total of $2,318,553 from May and June.

The money comes from the extra penny tax on most retail purchases inside Fayette County.

The SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) money is destined for a host of projects to be funded over the 5-year collection period with projections of raising around $115 million. Brock said the initial revenues came in one month after collections started in April. Expectations were that those revenues would not start for approximately three months, she said.

Immediate goals for the revenue received includes buying computers, beginning the technology-related 21st Century Classroom initiative, paying on the school system’s debt service and purchasing textbooks for the 2009-2010 school year, Brock said.

Those goals carry a price tag of approximately $303,000 for computers, $400,000 for textbooks, $610,000 for 21st Century electrical installation and $2 million on debt service payments.
