Fayette County fortunate to have had Abi-hassan

I was very upset to learn that the current director of Fayette County Animal Control, Miguel Abi-hassan, is leaving Fayette County to pursue a career with the Atlanta Humane Society.

Since Miguel assumed the position of shelter director five years ago, the health and welfare of the animals at the shelter has improved tremendously. The adoption rate is up 50 percent and the euthanization rate is down. The majority of pets are now wormed, receive a vaccine (DA2P/dogs and DHLPP/cats), and all are microchipped prior to being adopted.

In addition, Miguel has also worked very hard at submitting and securing grants/donations for shelter improvements (i.e., air filtration system in the cat area, skylights, Microban floor covering, cages for cat maternity ward, etc.).

Yes, the Fayette County Animal Shelter is still a “kill” shelter, and they do not accept “owner surrendered” pets, but these policies were put in place by our county officials more than 20 years ago.

My family and I have lived in Fayette County for 17 years and know that Miguel has done more for Fayette County Animal Control than any other official before him. I am truly sorry to see him leave.

It’s too bad that Fayette County officials have never acknowledged the great job that Miguel and his staff have done and continue to do, despite all the budget cuts.

But, as always, animal welfare is at the bottom of their list of priorities. Atlanta’s gain is Fayette’s loss.
