National School Counseling Week is here (Feb. 6-10) but Fayette’s school counselors got a jumpstart on recognition of their efforts with special visitors from the Georgia Department of Education.

Phil Hurst and Wayne Robinson, both from the office of Learning Support, were the featured speakers at the first Fayette School Counselors Association (FSCA) meeting of the new calendar year. Topics covered included a newly implemented counselor listserv that will improve communication between school counselors and the state department and efforts that are being made to include counselors as essential members of school improvement teams.

The speakers also clarified the roles and responsibilities of school counselors and announced that State Superintendent Kathy Cox would recognize school counselors at the February 9 state board of education meeting.

In recognition of National School Counseling Week, FSCA President Phyllis Bennett presented Barbara Serapion, director of pupil personnel services, with a plant in honor of the contributions that she has made to school counselors in Fayette County.

The FSCA was formed in 2000 for the purposes of advancing the profession of school counseling, promoting an understanding and appreciation of guidance and counseling services, enhancing a spirit of unity, cooperation, support and fellowship among counselors and the community, and providing opportunities for professional development.
