Tonight’s high school football match-upsThu, 10/20/2005 - 4:11pm
By: Michael Boylan
East Coweta (5-3) vs. Lovejoy (3-5) This game may not be the game everyone thought it would be at the beginning of the season but it still has plenty of playoff implications. East Coweta has won two region games in a row since falling to Starr’s Mill and, with a 3-1 region record, they are still in the hunt for a region championship. They just need to hope Newnan beats Starr’s Mill this week and then they beat Lovejoy tonight and Newnan next Friday. The Indians scored the most points they had all season last Friday against Union Grove and have to be feeling good about their chances tonight. Lovejoy picked up their first region win last week by handing Newnan a 43-20 loss. They had lost the previous three games by a combined score of 73-50. Mario Fannin, injured earlier this year, seemed to be in good form last week as Lovejoy compiled close to 500 yards of offense. The Indians will need to slow that balanced attack down and create a solid attack plan of their own. Starr’s Mill (6-2) vs. Newnan (3-5) The Panthers are tied for first in the region and know that with wins tonight and next Friday against Fayette County they can win the region championship. The Panthers have had a week to stew about their loss to Mundy’s Mill and nurse any of the nagging injuries that they may have picked up thus far this season. Expect the Panthers to be motivated tonight, but it will take more than a positive attitude to win this one. Starr’s Mill’s defense needs to play their typically intense game and the offense needs to be able to move the ball and control the clock. Newnan has shown themselves capable of last minute magic at least once this season. The Cougars have dropped two region games in a row but they have good personnel on both sides of the ball. If they are allowed to do as they please, they can put up some points in a hurry. McIntosh (3-5) vs. Haralson County (5-3) Confidence at McIntosh has to be fairly high as the Chiefs defeated Woodward Academy in overtime last week and have shown themselves to be in the majority of their games this year. The defense has played very well, though they had a few breakdowns last week, and they have had a number of players step up on offense throughout the year. A complete game tonight against a rising star in the region and the Chiefs will soar into the final game of the season next week at Chapel Hill. McIntosh will have their hands full though. Haralson County disposed of a tough Sandy CreeK team last week and still cling to hopes of a playoff spot if they win out. The Rebels have one of the Super 11 on their team this year, Brandon Wood, who runs the ball and plays defensive end. The Chiefs have to limit his impact on the game on both sides of the ball to get a win tonight. Northgate (5-4) vs. Chapel Hill (3-5) Northgate wraps up their season tonight, as their bye week comes in the final week of the high school football schedule. The Vikings have had a bit of an odd year, winning a big game one week and losing the next. If they don’t make the playoffs, the memories of their double overtime loss to Woodward Academy in the first week are sure to haunt them throughout the off season. The Vikings are coming off of a 7-0 win over Villa Rica and their touchdown came on what many in the area consider to be one of the most impressive drives they can remember. Northgate controlled the ball for close to a full quarter, squeezing out 15 plays and keeping the ball out of Villa Rica’s hands. Chapel Hill has lost three games in a row and four of their last five games. Last week, the Panthers fell to Creekside 20-14. Sandy Creek (6-2) @ Alexander (1-7) The Patriots won’t overlook the Cougars tonight. They need to take care of business and not worry about Creekside until practices start on Monday. While thngs may not have gone according to plan thus far for the Patriots, they are doing good things on offense and defense. They also know that they can dominate a game very quickly. Even though Haralson County handed them a one point loss last week, the Patriots will focus on the positives and try to establish some offensive momentum early. Alexander has lost six games in a row but they are averaging over 15 points a game and have hung close to some tough teams. If they can keep it close, they could give Sandy Creek a hard time. Whitewater (8-0) @ Mill Creek (3-6) The Wildcats are gunning for an undefeated season and with a stable of healthy running backs, a solid quarterback, good receivers and a defense that swarms, forces turnovers and rarely lets up, they should be in good shape to finish that run. Mill Creek played a very good Bremen team close last week, losing 10-7. Despite losing six of their last seven games, Whitewater coach Amos McCreary feels that his team will not overlook the Hawks in their quest to stay unbeaten. Landmark Christian (5-3) @ Whitfield Academy (3-5) The War Eagles may have only won two of their last five games but they were both region wins and, right now, that’s all that matters. Landmark has won their two region games by a combined score of 66-12 and a win tonight, combined with a win by Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy, will set up an epic game next week for the region championship. Landmark has a potent offense and a defense that can get to the ball quickly and put a lot of pressure on a quarterback. Whitefield’s lone win came against Our Lady of Mercy but since then they have lost two region games in a row. Every team is dangerous right now and Landmark just needs to deal with the Wolfpack tonight. All games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. login to post comments |
