I remember that when Flat Creek Golf Course was built, I worked for the local newspaper and was sent to cover the first tee-off. It was on Labor Day, 1968.

It was at 7 a.m. so I had to get up at 6:30 a.m. and whip out there from Fayetteville.

I stood promptly at the first tee and got my picture. I was slightly disappointed, though, that none of the four gentlemen were from Fayette County.

I then went into the clubhouse for a much needed cup of coffee.

Now, it had taken $1 million to dredge the swamp along Flat Creek and to create a golf course.

So I entitled my newspaper article, “The Million Dollar Cup of Coffee.”
