A Fayetteville woman was charged Monday with cruelty to children, child neglect and contributing to the delinquency of a minor after leaving her 10-year-old daughter at home in charge of her 1-year-old son.

Jane Westbrook, 42, was charged with the offenses, according to Maj. Kevin Gooding. The mother left the 1-year-old in the custody of her 10-year-old daughter while she went to work, Gooding said.

The woman’s 18-year-old daughter came home and explained to a neighbor that she was not comfortable with the situation, Gooding said. The neighbor subsequently called police, he said.

Fayetteville police also responded Monday evening to a report of a burglary at Cobblestone Apartments off Ga. Highway 54. The tenant told officers she returned home at approximately 7 p.m. to find her front door kicked in, said Gooding. Officers noted the theft of a flat screen television, a DVD player, XBox and video games, Gooding said.

Gooding said the burglary is under investigation.

And on June 18, officers were called to a Pecan Ridge Drive residence after the parents of their 19-year-old son said he had been robbed of $40 on Walker Avenue while he was out riding his bicycle, said Gooding.

The son said he was jumped by three black males, two of whom had silver revolvers, Gooding said. The son told officers he chased the three for some distance.

Gooding said the incident is under investigation.
