Maxwell: Horgan should resign now

I write this letter to you to address a cloud that hovers over the Fayette County Board of Commissioners. A little over two weeks ago an event occurred that no reasonable voter, including myself, could anticipate or should tolerate.

I have resided in Fayette County since 1972. I have no recollection of a similar occurrence with any locally elected official. It is not only a privilege but also an honor to serve in an elected capacity. But with that privilege and honor comes the heightened scrutiny of one’s individual actions. As an elected official, one is placed in a position of trust by the public. The voting public has the expectation and the right that all elected officials serve with the highest ethical standards and integrity.

I have spoken with dozens of Fayette County residents as well as a number of county commissioners from around the state, and the overwhelming consensus is that the only reasonable, the only honorable and the only justifiable action that should be taken is the immediate resignation of an elected official who violates the public trust.

I have met with [Commissioner] Robert [Horgan] and I have shared my thoughts with him.

Eric K. Maxwell

Fayetteville, Ga.

[Maxwell is a member of the Fayette County Commission.]
