Starr’s Mill’s Cartwright a state champ once again

The Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers swim team placed 19th and captured two individual state championships in the Class AAAAA state swimming championships. Junior Lauren Cartwright took home the gold in the 200 individual medley (203.81), successfully defending her title from last year, and in the 100 butterfly (55.95). Both of her times were good enough to earn her All-American status.

Cartwright was also a member of the 200 medley relay team that finished 13th, other members of that team were freshmen Bailey Cartwright and Lauren Scott and sophomore Sarah Larson. The 200 freestyle relay team of Scott, junior Kristen Schroder, senior Mackenzie Garrot and Bailey Cartwright finished 14th.

The Starr’s Mill men also performed well with senior Scott Adams placing 16th in the 50 freestyle and 17th in the 100 freestyle. The men’s medley relay team of Adams, junior Austin Ellyson, sophomore Matt Boyle and senior Danny Clasen finished 16th.

Fayette County’s Katelyn Davis opened the meet last Thursday with a fifth place finish in the 50 fly (58.70) and a 15th place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:10:31). On Saturday in the finals, she finished 16th in the breaststroke (1:10.83) and eighth in the fly (59.69). Davis is currently 21 one hundredths of a second off qualifying for the junior nationals.

In the Class A-AAAA championships, the McIntosh boys 200 medley relay team placed 13th, while the girls placed 17th. The boys 400 free relay team placed 17th, while the girls placed 11th. Bryan Mitchell placed 13th in the 200 individual medley, while Keaton Hannon placed 14th for the girls. Thomas Lucak placed seventh in the 100 butterfly, while Nicole Roddenberry took second for the girls. Lucak also placed 11th in the 100 backstroke, while Mitchell took 13th in the 100 breast for the boys and Roddenberry placed fifth in the 100 breast for the girls. Overall, the McIntosh Lady Chiefs placed 16th, while the boys placed 21st.

The Whitewater boys 200 medley relay team and 400 free relay team came in 20th. They missed the finals by three-tenths of a second in the medley relay. David Menchinger came in fifth in the 500 free and third in the 100 backstroke posting an All-American consideration time of 53.06. Overall the boys team came in 24th out of 40 teams. “Unfortunately Cassandra Heimann had to scratch due to a knee injury but Peter Menke had a good showing in the 100 breaststroke,” said Coach Elizabeth Loewecke. “I am looking forward to next year. We won’t be losing any swimmers to graduation so we will have a strong team.”

Sandy Creek’s Zach Payne finished fourth overall in the A-AAAA swim meet for the 100 yard butterfly. The Sandy Creek boys 200 yard freestyle relay team made up of Zach Payne, Isaac Payne, Andrew Henry and Stephen Boone swam a 1:40.65 for their personal best in the state preliminaries.
