Fayette County Retired Educators Association (FCREA) recently honored one eighth grade student from each Fayette County middle school. FCREA is the local unit of Georgia Retired Educators Association (GREA). This year marks the first time in its history that FCREA honored a student from each middle school. Criteria for recognition included academic performance along with community involvement. FCREA  recognized the students, their parents, and school counselors during its annual awards ceremony May 21, 2009. The students received certificates acknowledging their achievements as well as gifts. FCREA is the local unit of Georgia Retired Educators Association. The mission of the organization is to unite retired educators in Georgia for fellowship, support, and educational/ community service and to improve benefits for all retired educators through cooperation with local, state and the national organization.

James Haymans, president of FCREA stated, “The Fayette County Retired Educators is honors all schools, teachers, and students in Fayette County.  This year we wanted to honor more than one middle school student and decided to pick one student from each of the middle schools who excelled academically, participated in various extracurricular activities, and demonstrated school spirit.  FCREA plans to make this an annual project to recognize these students, parents and school counselors at our last meeting of the school year.”

Becky Smith, executive director of Fayette Alliance Coordinating Teamwork Outreach and Resources (FACTOR) attended the ceremony presenting gifts to the students on behalf of FACTOR. Student recognition is a part of FACTOR’s Community Plan for 2009 as research shows when young people are recognized and rewarded for their contributions at school, they are less likely to be involved in substance use and other problem behaviors.
