Coweta County Commission approved two changes orders June 2 for the rehabilitation of the historic 1906 Coweta Court Courthouse. Between those changes and one that occurred previously, the project at this point is approximately $75,000 below the original contract amount of $6.284 million.

County administrator Theron Gay noted for commissioners that projects such as the old courthouse often involve unexpected factors that arise when re-modeling older buildings.

“When you remove stuff and when something is this old, you don’t always know what you’re going to find,” Gay said, adding that the project had a contingency built into the budget. Gay said the project was still within the contingency amount.

The first change order decreased the contract amount by $161,460. Change orders #2 and #3, approved Tuesday, added a total of $87,527 to the project for a contract total of $6.210 million. Change order #2 dealt with structural repairs to the clock tower and dome while order #3 involved the need to remove, replace and repair structural damage and rotten wood.

The $6.284 project was awarded to Headley Construction in September, with work on the interior and exterior expected to be completed sometime in 2010.

Commissioners voted unanimously to approved the change orders.

The project is being funded through 1-cent sales tax dollars. Once completed, the courthouse will be occupied by the Coweta County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Coweta County Probate Court.
