Northgate's Berry Named DAR Outstanding Teacher of American History

"Filled to the maximum," describes Michael Berry's AP US History Classes at Northgate High School, according to Dr. Therese Reddikopp, Principal.   Berry was recently recognized as the 2009 Outstanding Teacher of American History by the General Daniel Newnan Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

Michael Berry also has a passion to show students the connections between American History and Literature.  He has been instrumental in creating the "American Studies" combination, linking Advanced U.S. History students with Advanced American Literature students, broadening knowledge and interest in both subjects.   Berry also holds voluntary weekly meetings with Northgate Social Studies and English teachers before school to talk about how to cross the content of each field so that student expectations and interest are at their highest.

And what is the philosophy of Outstanding Teacher of American History Teacher Michael Berry?   Answering this question in his application:  "Education is not simply a profession, but a lifestyle."   This dedication has brought not only increasing popularity of Berry's AP U.S. History classes but enhanced scores for his students in AP History course national tests.   "Because his students consistently score so well, he was asked to be a speaker at the National AP Conference," commented Reddikopp in her letter of recommendation for the DAR award.  Berry's presentation was so well received that he has been invited to return to the National AP Conference in 2009 for a repeat performance.

Berry, known as "Coach" to his students in the classroom as well as the football and soccer fields, first came to the attention of the General Daniel Newnan Chapter through a former student who commented on his increased appreciation and interest in American History as a result of being in Berry's class in 2007.  Other awards include Northgate STAR Teacher in 2007 and 2008, and Northgate Teacher of the Year 2004 and 2008.

The General Daniel Newnan Chapter annually recognizes an outstanding teacher of American History.   For information about nomination guidelines or NSDAR membership, contact Jeannine Jackson, Registrar at 770-253-6517.
