The McIntosh Chiefs have a new head football coach.

Dwight Jones, who coached the Northside, Columbus Patriots to a 9-3 record and the second round of the AAA state playoffs this year, has accepted the job at the Peachtree City school. Jones has been coaching football in Georgia and Alabama for 26 years. His first head football coaching job was in 1990 at Russell County High School in Alabama. He coached there for five years before coaching Hardaway High School for six years, Auburn, Alabama High School for one year and Northside, Columbus for the last four years.

Jones cited the challenge of the job as one of the biggest attractions to the position.

“Everyone says that they haven’t ever won at McIntosh,” said Jones, unsure of the exact date of the school’s last winning season. “We expect to win though.” Jones is bringing defensive coordinator Paul Carroll with him and both men are planning on instilling discipline into the program.

“To be successful we need to not beat our selves with turnovers or penalties,” said Jones. “We need to play 48 minutes of sound football.”

While Jones and Carroll will stay on at Northside through the end of the school year, they plan on having early morning breakfasts three days a week with the football team and will have spring practices the first two weeks of May.

Jones replaces Butch Prosser, who has coached the team for six years. The Chiefs record since 2001 is 13-37. McIntosh went 3-7 this year.
