It’s about to get to number-crunching time once again in Peachtree City.

City staffers are working furiously to hammer out the final city-manager approved version of the budget that typically represents the recommendation to City Council. It is expected that version of the budget will be available by Wednesday, several days in advance of the city’s planned budget workshop meetings.

Those meetings are the “first crack” the council will have at the budget. Typically council has a number of questions that are presented to city staff for resolution.

The first meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 8 at City Hall. A second follow-up meeting, if necessary, is slated for Tuesday, June 9 at the Gathering Place recreation center near the city’s amphitheater off McIntosh Trail.

The coming year may shape up to be a tricky one for Peachtree City and other local governments due to dwindling tax revenues from local option sales taxes, which combined with property taxes combine for the lion’s share of revenues for local governments.

Already the city has axed 23 public works employees in switching to a landscaping contract and another four employees from the developmental services division, which has seen a reduced workload with the slowdown in construction.

And despite the economy’s continued struggles, there has been chatter about a possible property tax increase to help balance the city’s bottom line for the coming fiscal year.
