Jesse Hill is back again this year with his Shoot the Hoop summer camp. This summer beginning June 1 the academic and sports camp will be held in Fairburn near Landmark Christian School and can serve up to 250 students.

Non-profit Shoot The Hoop, Inc. and camp founder Jesse Hill said the unique camp provides a wide range of learning experiences and activities designed to motivate minds, strengthen bodies and spark a creative spirit that will last a lifetime. Open to children from kindergarten age through 8th grade, the camp emphasizes reading and mathematics, Hill said, but also includes CRCT assistance and a science and technology curriculum along with field trips and historical tours. Hill stressed the importance of academic excellence, noting that the instructors are certified teachers aided by local college students.

The camp will be located at 109 Clayton Street in Fairburn. Hill said sponsorship of the 2009 summer learning camp has been provided by a generous donation from nearby Landmark Christian School. With a $25 registration fee and a $65 camp fee, Shoot the Hoop camp runs from June 1 through August 1 and will be open from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. with after-camp care from 3-6 p.m. at no charge. The camp is open to children in grades K-8 this year and has a maximum of 250 seats available to students from Fulton, Coweta, Fayette and surrounding counties.

“Good instructors are key to helping improve CRCT scores and we know that instruction helps kids get on the right track and stay on the right track,” Hill explained. “We want to help kids improve their academic performance and develop good study habits before they get to middle school. That’s important for their future.”

But is not only academics that fill the day-long camp experience. Hill said the full program at the eight-week camp is one that provides a well-rounded list of opportunities, including activities that help develop young bodies and expand horizons. A sample of the offerings include golf, basketball, cheerleading, dance and music.

Shoot the Hoop, Inc. Summer Camps began in 2003 with a 4-week session held in two locations including Temple of Prayer Church in Fairburn and at Palmetto Elementary School. In 2004, an aftercare component was added to accommodate working parents. Mathematics became a part of the Shoot the Hoop, Inc. Summer Program in the summer of 2005. Shoot the Hoop, Inc. Summer Programs continue to expand.
