Budget time is fast approaching for the Fayette County School System. With budget issues soon to be hammered out, Comptroller Laura Brock on May 18 provided an initial budget summary that showed a decrease of approximately $10 million from the current $195 million budget.

Noting that the state Department of Education revenue figures were tentative and subject to last-minute changes, Brock said she anticipated receiving a total of approximately $94 million from combined state sources along with approximately $91 million from local sources.

Brock estimated the $91 million in local revenues to be a result of a 2 percent decrease in the tax digest with a 93 percent collection rate. The collection rate last year was 94 percent, she said.

Brock said local revenues, combined with currently anticipated state funding, should be sufficient to make up the revenue required to balance the budget.

“I feel very confident that we can balance it,” Brock said.

The school board will adopt the budget by June 30.
