Losses are never easy to take, but losses in championship games tend to sting a little more than others. Mistakes get amplified and missed opportunities get played over and over in one’s head with one word repeating itself, “If.”

Whitewater’s varsity girls soccer team and McIntosh’s boys soccer team both had a chance to capture their second state titles in three years this past weekend, but their opponents from Marist took that opportunity away.

The Lady Wildcats came back from an early 2-0 deficit and had several chances to take the lead and the win but fell short in their quest.

The Chiefs entered Saturday’s final ranked first in Class AAAA, the state and the nation. They had a perfect 22-0 record entering the final, but as many teams can tell you, from the New England Patriots to our own Fayette County Lady Tigers, a perfect season is hard to accomplish. So is beating the same team twice in one year. McIntosh had topped the War Eagles 3-1 earlier in the season.

Fans got exciting games this weekend with the game between Whitewater and Marist being among the best girls soccer games this reporter has covered in 10 years at the newspaper. Unfortunately, the results had the local teams on the losing side of the scoreboard.

There will be more soccer titles won by teams from Fayette County and both schools will field strong teams once again next year, but a bright tomorrow doesn’t take away the sting of coming so close today.
