Festival weekend in Fayetteville

This is one of the Fayetteville’s biggest weekends of the year. Not only can area residents check out the annual Old Courthouse Art Show and sample some of the best food in the area with the annual Taste of Fayette event, but the Holliday-Dorsey-Fife Museum will present “A Taste of Living History” and there will be two big concerts to get people up and moving.

Fayetteville First United Methodist Church, on the square in Fayetteville, will present Montana Skies on Friday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m. The duo is described as a must see live concert experience, providing the full spectrum of an orchestra crossed with the energy of a rock band. By fusing traditional sounds with new technology, they generate music with multiple layers, textures and rhythm...and it’s all created live. In concert the duo delves into music from Pink Floyd to Vivaldi, as well as their own, award winning, originals that have been featured everywhere from NPR to the Travel Channel. Tickets are $20 for adults, $12 for students and seniors (60 and over). Phone 770-716-1231 for more information.

The 41st annual Old Courthouse Art Show will feature over 75 artists from around the country working in a variety of mediums. It is a juried fine art show and visitors can browse oil paintings, photography, jewelry, pottery and more. Children can also participate in the monster mural project located in the kids art tent. The art show runs from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and from 12-5 p.m. on Sunday.

“A Taste of Living History” shows free demonstrations by artisans that include chair-caner, quilter, blacksmith and potter among several others. The Sons of the American Revolution will be on hand to teach children’s games from long ago and the Sons of Confederate Veterans will establish an authentic Civil War campsite and conduct rifle drills. Celtic Ties will perform from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday. Admission to the exhibits in the museum is $5 for adults, $4 for students and seniors and $3 for children six and older. “A Taste of Living History” lasts from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and from 12-5 p.m. on Sunday.

The Southern Crescent Chorale makes its sixth appearance at the Villages Amphitheater Saturday with a rollicking evening of Big Band music. The seventy voice choir will fill the evening air with the swinging sounds of Big Band music from the 1940s through music of today. A special feature of this concert will be the seventeen piece big band Night Train who will not only accompany the Chorale but will also play many great tunes featuring soloist Tony Winston.

Winston has been a major presence in the Atlanta jazz scene for over a decade. As a soloist, and with the Tony Winston Trio, he has been heard in most all of the jazz venues throughout the city, including Ray’s on the River, Eclipse di Luna, Otto’s, Sambuca Jazz Cafe, Coach and Six and countless others. He has recorded vocals for radio and television commercials for such clients as GE Capitol, Kroger, Atlanta Classic Cars, and Walt Disney World. Winston is known for the hip, fresh sound he brings to jazz and pop standards.

The Chorale will be singing many favorites including “Sing, Sing, Sing,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “Tuxedo Junction,” “Jump, Jive and Wail,” and many more. Be sure to wear your dancing shoes because the dance floor will be open all evening. You can bring your own picnic and drinks or plan to buy food and beverages at the concert.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors ages 60 and up. The show begins at 8 p.m.
