Sandy Creek and Landmark girls to play for region titles

Friday night saw mixed results for the local basketball teams. Landmark Christian and Sandy Creek’s girls both won to put themselves in their respective region championship games, while Fayette County’s boys picked up a win over Mundy’s Mill to snap up the third seed from region 4-AAAAA. In other games, the Starr’s Mill’s boys and girls and Sandy Creek’s boys lost.

The Sandy Creek Lady Patriots defeated Alexander 62-53 on Friday. Morganne Campbell was the team’s leading scorer with 22 points. The win puts them up against Woodward Academy tonight for the region title. The Patriot boys fell in their game to Alexander, 49-42. Sandy Creek will now face Chapel Hill for third place in the region.

Landmark Christian’s Lady War Eagles opened their game with a 9-0 run and led the entire way in their 55-40 win over St. Francis. They will take on Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy tonight for the region championship.

Fayette County’s boys bounced back from the semi-final upset to Starr’s Mill to defeat Mundy’s Mill 80-66. Channing Welch led the team in scoring with 15 points and Jeremiah Enloe added 14.

In other 4-AAAAA tournament action, Starr’s Mill’s boys fell to Newnan in the region final 59-35 with Mark Harris leading the way in scoring for the Panthers with 14 points. The Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers lost to Union Grove in the third place game 51-37. Meredith Lytle led the Lady Panthers in scoring with 12 points.

State tournament play begins next weekend and all six of these teams are in. The Starr's Mill boys and the Landmark and Sandy Creek's girls will all have home games, while the Starr's Mill girls and the Fayette County and Sandy Creek boys will open the tournaments on the road.
