Fayette County got some good news last week when the latest unemployment figures were released by the Georgia Department of Labor.

Fayette’s unemployment rate actually shrank four-tenths of 1 percent from February to March, according to the DOL report. Fayette’s unemployment rate for March was 7.4 percent, down from 7.8 percent in February.

The Department of Labor reports that 238 Fayette residents left the unemployment rolls between February and March. That leaves an estimated 3,851 in Fayette unemployed, per the March figures.

Fayette’s unemployment rate from a year ago was 4.2 percent, but it has not been immune from the global economic slowdown. Fayette remains one of the best-positioned counties in a comparison of statewide unemployment rates.

Fayette also has the lowest unemployment rate among all metro Atlanta counties.

Neighboring Coweta County saw its unemployment rate dip from 9.0 to 8.9 percent.

Other metro counties unemployment rates for March:

• Clayton, 10.5 percent

• Cobb, 8.4 percent

• DeKalb, 8.9 percent

• Douglas, 10.2 percent

• Fulton, 9.1 percent

• Gwinnett, 8.4 percent

• Henry, 8.7 percent

• Rockdale, 10 percent
