The Clyde Thomason Detachment of the Marine Corps League held its chartering ceremony at The Gathering Place in Peachtree City on Wednesday April 15. The meeting, attended by its local membership and distinguished guests from the Marine Corps League’s Department of Georgia, marked an important event for area Marines. This event- the ‘activation’ of the detachment, gives the community an organization focusing on local Marines and the community in general. Marine Corps League Department of Georgia Commandant Michael Clark presided over the ceremony, which adds another veteran’s service organization to Fayette and Coweta counties. The Marine Corps League joins units of the VFW and American Legion that are already active in the community. “It’s a great day for the community, and for the Marine Corps League,” said the newly sworn in detachment Commandant, George Dienhart. “We are now up and running ready to serve not just Local Marines, but also the residents of Fayette and Coweta counties” The Marine Corps League traditionally offers services to local retired and honorably discharged Marines. The MCL also tries to service the community through children’s programs. “We have a young community down here,” stated Dienhart. “We plan to be quite active in the area’s ‘Toys for Tot’s’ program as well as forming a “Young Marines” detachment as soon as is feasible. We aim to have an immediate and positive impact in the community.” The detachment also plans to take the lead in the local ‘Marines for Life program’. “Marines for Life is basically Marines helping Marines program. I have appointed my Sr. Vice- Commandant, Bill Stevens as our Marines for Life chair,” added Dienhart. “He will lead our efforts to ensure that Marines in our community are well taken care of.” The detachment meets on the first Wednesday following the first Monday of every month at 7 p.m. All meetings are currently held at the Gathering Place in Peachtree City. Former Marines and friends of the Marine Corps are encouraged to attend. login to post comments |
