Alcan gets state award

Alcan Packaging of Peachtree City was honored today with the top state award for medium-sized manufacturers.

The company, which employs 160 people and had revenues of $80 million last year, was recognized at a luncheon for Georgia Manufacturing Appreciation Week.

Alcan’s success is directly attributable to the quality of its employees and their teamwork, which helps not only the company and its customers but the local community as well, said site manager Christopher J. Turk.

Alcan, which previously produced cigarette cartons and boxes, now produces packaging for Wrigley’s gum, said Matt Forshee, CEO of the Fayette County Development Authority. The market for cigarettes has slowed in America, Forshee said, noting that the Wrigley deal helped the company sustain its operations.

“They took advantage of the changing market to their benefit,” Forshee said. “... Especially in an economy where companies can lose one contract and go out of business.”

Forshee said the development authority is “very excited” that Alcan was selected for the award, adding that the company is a good corporate citizen of Fayette County.
The Alcan facility was previously owned and operated by the Lawsdon Mardon company before it was purchased by Alcan.

Alcan’s specialty packaging division is a world leader, serving the food and beverage, pharmaceutical, medical, beauty and tobacco markets. The company employs 30,000 people worldwide at 129 sites in 31 countries.

Turk credited part of Alcan’s success to the educational efforts of Griffin Tech and also Georgia’s Quick Start program, which helps train employees.
