Coweta building projects defy recession

By all accounts there is a recession sweeping the nation. But from the number of business projects currently in various stages of development across Coweta County, the recession locally could be a lot worse. In reality, Coweta is faring better than many of Georgia’s counties.

The largest retail/commercial project currently underway is the 49,228 square-foot Sargeant Plaza located on Ga. Highway 16 near Sharpsburg. Tenants for the development have yet to be determined, according to county planning staff.

The area of Ga. Highway 34 East will be the home of several new businesses. The Ruth Drive retail site, located just west of Thomas Crossroads will build at 11,400 square feet with future tenants to be determined. Also in the Thomas Crossroads area west of Ga. Highway 154 will be Tractor Supply at 19,150 square feet. And on the east side of the crossroads, adjacent to Flash Foods, construction is well under way for the new Walgreen’s covering 14,820 square feet.

Other development projects include the 1,400 square-foot Tomo Japanese Restaurant on Glenda Trace, a 3,000 square-foot Green Elf Quick Lube on Oak Lawn Circle, the 6,446 square-foot Auto Zone on Ga. Highway 154 and a 1,000 square-foot expansion of Chick-fil-A on Glenda Trace.

The object of significant commercial construction in recent years, Senoia has another project near completion. The 3-story Historic Senoia Phase II office building at Main Street and Seavy Street is expected to be completed in coming weeks.

Other building projects at various stages of development include the 8,879 square-foot Doctor’s Hospice on Ga. Highway 29 North, Crossroads Church on Hwy. 16 totaling 64,913 square feet, the Falcon Aviation expansion on East Aviation Way at 26,000 square feet and the Harley Davidson warehouse on Hwy. 16 at 5,000 square feet.

And governmental projects underway include the 3,725 square-foot Coweta County Sheriff Outpost on West Aviation Way, work on buildings A and B of the Veteran’s Hospital totaling 13,000 square feet and the Coweta County Wastewater Treatment Facility totaling 3,200 square feet.

Perhaps the most visible project in Coweta County is the continued rehabilitation of the landmark 1906 courthouse in downtown Newnan. The $7.5 million project is funded by Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax dollars. Ongoing work on the interior and exterior is designed to upgrade and preserve the historic structure.
