The Fayette Senior Services gave its 10th Annual Music Concert last weekend and added a bonus — a music contest for senior citizens.

The Fayette Senior Idol drew 16 entrants and one of the finalists, Martha Clarke, is from Fayetteville. The pianist played “Satin Doll.” She also plays each Sunday morning at Cokes Chapel United Methodist Church in Sharpsburg. She received a $50 savings bond.

The Senior Idol contest was open for groups or individuals who were 50 years of age and above.

The top four winners in the afternoon senior contest performed in the evening, along with the Fayette County High School Chorus quartet. They include tenor Daniel Groce, tenor Jeremie McNease, baritone Trevor Martin, and bass Aaron Massie.

The main music concert centered around “Those Guys,” a quartet consisting of Rick Massengale, piano; Bill Nelmes, acoustic bass and vocalist; Ira Polk, saxophone; and Rex Butner, drums. The group plays locally on weekends.

Fayette Senior Services Director Andy Carden said the silent auction brought in $3,000 to be used toward the Friendship Center, its home on Lee Street in Fayetteville.

The organization also oversees in-home service, Adult Day Services, and Transportation, all available on a sliding fee, Meals on Wheels for less mobile seniors are free but donations accepted, and the J.O.Y. Club, a Just Older Youth club for active seniors. There are day trips, cultural events, shopping, etc.

He said that an expected income from the evening concert attendance and from sponsors will total nearly $10,000.

“The concert and Senior Idol Contest were well received,” he said, “and it has been suggested that we hold the Senior Idol contest as a separate event next year. We would encourage our Fayette County seniors to be on the lookout for the date next spring.”
