The regular season of the high school basketball season ended over the weekend and the post-season, in the form of region basketball tournaments, has begun.

Fayette County’s boys (23-1, 11-1 region) picked up two more wins at the end of the season. The Tigers defeated Lovejoy 62-59 on Friday with Cameron Carruthers leading the way with 16 points. Carruthers was the team’s leading scorer on Saturday as well, scoring 20 points against McIntosh in Fayette County’s 62-44 win over the Chiefs.

The Tigers have a first round bye in the region 4-AAAAA tournament and have already qualified for the AAAAA state tournament. They will take on Starr’s Mill on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Mundy’s Mil High School.

The Lady Tigers (12-12, 6-6) went 1-1 over the weekend. They lost to Lovejoy 46-43 with Kristene Walker dropping 19 points for Fayette County. Walker would also be the leading scorer for the Lady Tigers on Saturday in their 43-38 win over McIntosh on Saturday. Tessah Holt chipped in 11 points against McIntosh.

The Lady Tigers faced Union Grove last night at 6 p.m. at Mundy’s Mill High School after the paper went to press. If they win, they will take on the winner of the Lovejoy and East Coweta match on Thursday. A win would also send the girls back to the AAAAA state tournament.

Both the Starr’s Mill boys and girls fell to Newnan in their regular season finale. The Lady Panthers (15-10, 6-6) lost 59-49 with Kirstin Massmann leading the team in scoring with 18 points, while the boys lost by a score of 64-57.

The third time was the charm for the Starr’s Mill varsity boys basketball team. They defeated Lovejoy 60-53 in the first round of the region 4-AAAAA tournament on Monday earning them a spot in the AAAAA state tournament next week. The Panthers trailed 16-7 at the end of the first quarter but went on a 19-2 run in the second quarter and held Lovejoy to 10 total points in the second and third quarter. Mark Harris led the team in scoring with 28 points, while Spencer Shelton added 11.

“My feet haven’t touched the ground yet,” said head coach Brandon Hutchins, who is so proud of his team earning their first bid to the state tournament in school history. “Our zone press really threw Lovejoy off and our kids just woke up and responded.”

Starr’s Mill now gets a third crack at Fayette County at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday night. The Tigers have defeated the Panthers in their previous two meetings this season.

The Lady Panthers played yesterday against Mundy’s Mill at 4:30 p.m.

The girls have split with Mundy’s Mill this season, losing the first game by one point but winning their most recent match by two points. If the girls win, they will play Newnan on Thursday.

In 4-AAAA action over the weekend, the McIntosh boys (9-13, 7-3) split. They beat Northgate 36-24 on Friday before Saturday’s loss to Fayette County. The win over Northgate helped earn the Chiefs a first round bye in the region 4-AAAA tournament, which is being held at Whitewater High School. The Chiefs will be off until Thursday at 4 p.m. when they will play the winner of the Douglas County and Northgate game. A win in that game will put McIntosh in the AAAA state tournament. The Lady Chiefs (4-12, 2-8) lost both games over the weekend, falling to Northgate 45-24 and then losing their game against Fayette County on Saturday. The Lady Chiefs fel to Douglas County 53-39 Monday. Elyse Chubb led McIntosh in scoring with 13 points.

Whitewater’s boys and girls both got swept over the weekend. The boys (14-11, 4-6) lost to Woodward Academy 85-60 on Friday and then lost to Temple on Saturday 62-56. The Lady Wildcats lost to Woodward Academy 57-38 and then lost a heartbreaker to Temple on Saturday, 48-47.

Whitewater’s girls (3-20, 0-10) lost to Chapel Hill 55-34 on Monday, while the boys will play Alexander on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The boys have faced Alexander once this season and lost by 33 points. It was the Wildcats first loss of the season.

Sandy Creek’s boys and girls both defeated Creekside last weekend. The Lady Patriots (17-4, 9-1) defeated Creekside 53-50 and earned themselves a first round bye. They will host the winner of the Douglas County and McIntosh game at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. They have defeated both of those teams twice this season. The boys (10-14, 6-4) win over the Seminoles put them in a first round game against Haralson County at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday. If the Patriots win they will take on Lithia Springs, a team that has beaten them twice this season, for a shot at making the AAAA state tournament.

In 5-A action, Our Lady of Mercy had two games remaining over the weekend. The Lady Bobcats (6-19, 1-9) picked up two wins, defeating Greenforest Christian 64-42 with Kelly Tolcher scoring 19 points. The girls beat Galloway 52-28 on Saturday with Alex Miles leading the team with 14 points. They have won three of their last four games. The boys (6-19, 3-7) went 0-2 over the weekend, falling to Greenforest Christian 69-56 and then losing to Galloway, 68-52, despite 13 points from Buck Caldwell.

Our Lady of Mercy will host the 5-a region tournament this week. The Lady Bobcats beat Greenforest Christian 62-54 on Monday and will meet Landmark Christian at 8:30 p.m. tonight. The boys took on St. Francis yesterday at 4 p.m. and the winner of that game will take on Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Landmark’s boys and girls wrapped up their regular season last week. The boys (6-19, 3-7) kicked off the region tournament with a game against Galloway at 8:30 p.m. yesterday. The winner of that match will face Whitefield Academy on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Landmark’s Lady War Eagles (15-6, 8-2) have a first round bye and will host the winner of the Greenforest and Our Lady of Mercy game at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
