A total of six students at Fayette County High took the National German Exam earlier this year. Two of them posted extremely high scores, earning them a chance to compete for an all expenses paid trip to Germany.

Jonathan Harper and Michael Broich scored higher than 96 percent and 92 percent, respectively, of all 26,000 students who took the test nationwide. Students must score at least 90 percent higher than all students taking the test in order to be considered for the free trip offered through the American Association of Teachers of German.

Students selected for the three-week trip stay with a German family, attend classes at a local high school and participate in tours of cultural significance. A nationally representative committee chooses the final award winners from among the candidates. The National German Exam is administered each year to high school students on the second, third and fourth level of German language study.

In addition to being considered for the trip to Germany, both Jonathan and Michael will be honored for their achievements on the test during a ceremony at the German Cultural Center on May 2.
