Lavonia Thompson Smith

Lavonia Thompson Smith, 93, Moreland, died Feb. 16, 2009. She was born Aug. 8, 1915 in Coweta County, one of seven born to Joseph Samuel and Hattie Eunah Evans Thompson. She was the last surviving child. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Levy Smith in 1993. She was a very progressive woman and embraced opportunities to improve her life and that of others for whom she felt responsible. She was the matriarch of First Baptist Church of Moreland where she was a member for 77 years. She taught Sunday School and the Sunbeams for 26 years.

Services were at the McKoon Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Jerry Eley, the Rev. Ralph Wade and the Rev. Searcy Jackson officiating. Interment was at Southview Cemetery, Moreland. Survivors include children, H. Richard Smith, Robert Larry and Phyllis Smith, Gail Smith and Leonard Carroll; grandchildren, Jeff and Leslie Carroll, Kim Smith and Joe Pelletier, and Stacey Smith and Kevin Henderson; six great-grandchildren; and friend Frances Moore. McKoon Funeral Home, Newnan, was in charge.
